Victoria Kendig has been an assistant professor of communication/media studies (journalism) and the campus newspaper adviser at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas, for five years. She was awarded the 2006 state Texas Intercollegiate Press Association Charles T. Choate Adviser of the Year, the first time it had been presented to a UMHB adviser. The campus newspaper, The Bells, has won numerous state and national awards, including being named three times in the past three years as best newspaper of the year in its division. Several of her journalism students have written freelance articles that have been published in national and regional magazines and newspapers. Before teaching at UMHB, she taught in the English department and worked at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. She was also a freelance writer for the Baylor Line, the alumni association magazine. She has worked as a reporter and column writer for the newspapers, Fort Worth Observer and Dothan Eagle (Ala.), and as a freelance feature writer for the Dallas Morning News. She has written for the Southern Baptist Convention and several regional and state magazines, including Waco Today, Etc., Discover and Texas Voices. She earned a B.A. in French from Oklahoma Baptist University, Shawnee, Okla., journalism hours from the University of Texas at Arlington, where she was a staff reporter for The Shorthorn, and an M.A. in English from Baylor University. Along with two UMHB journalism students, she presented a workshop at the October 2005 national Baptist Press Excellence in Journalism Conference. She and her husband, Loren, were born and raised in Fort Smith, Ark., and, besides Texas, have lived in Oklahoma, Alabama, Hawaii, Italy and Germany. Their family consists of son, Brian, and daughter-in-law, Ronie, daughter, Julie, and son-in-law, Mike, and grandchildren Ciara, Keighley, Ryan and Reagan.
