Kerry Owens has been a professor in the Department of Communication and Media Studies since the fall of 2003.  He serves as the Director of Forensics.  Before coming to Mary Hardin-Baylor, he taught at Mississippi College and the University of Louisiana at Monroe. He teaches public speaking, advanced public speaking, business speech, persuasion, and argumentation and debate.  Dr. Owens holds a B.A. in speech communication and journalism and an M.A. in speech communication from Baylor University.  He also holds a Ph.D. in speech communication with an emphasis in rhetoric and public address from Louisiana State University. His primary research interests are the rhetoric of the Civil Rights Movement and other areas of political communication.  His research has appeared in the Louisiana Communication Journal, Studies in Popular Culture, and Business Research Yearbook. He has also presented his research at both the National Communication Association Convention and the Southern States Communication Association Convention. Dr. Owens is past president of the Louisiana Communication Association and has served as an associate editor for the Louisiana Communication Journal.  He is also a former chair of the History of Rhetoric Interest Group of the Southern States Communication Association. Dr. Owens is married to Kathy Owens, Visiting Instructor in the Department of Communication and Media Studies, and most importantly, he is the father of two brilliant, attractive, and charming children, Allison and Charlie.
