Sader Sports Medicine Association
SSMA was founded in 2000-01 and is a student driven organization responsible for organizing and carrying out of student activities and community services outside the classroom environment of the Athletic Training Education Program. SSMA elects officers holds meetings and conducts their organization according to guidelines set by UMHB for all student organizations. SSMA is very active in community service programs, predominantly donating time and services to: The United States Marine Corps Toys for Tots, Scott and White Blood Mobile and Blood Drives as well as Habitat for Humanity.
Students involved in SSMA and who are interested in joining SSMA do not have to be in the Athletic Training Education Program. All students interested in this organization are welcome to join. SSMA collects bi-annual dues which are paid each semester at a cost of a $10.00 semester. This fee is also used for funding a variety of outside activities our students participate in.
For the past six years SSMA has taken an annual field trip to a destination decided upon by the students and assisted by the ATEP faculty and staff each spring. These trips have included touring and meeting with the athletic training staffs' of, The Houston Astros, The Dallas Mavericks, The Dallas Cowboys, The Boston Celtics, The Houston Texans, The Tom Landry Sports Medicine Center, as well as the Houston Comets.
Our students choose these sites as a means of exposure to environments not as common to athletic training students, and a chance to speak with the Athletic Trainers in those positions to gain insight to the realm of Professional Sports Athletic Training.
