Athletic Training Education Program
ATEP Mission and Goals
The UMHB ATEP mission is to promote well rounded athletic training education and experience to produce students to excel as tomorrow's allied health-care professionals in traditional and non-traditional settings. This is accomplished through didactic coursework, hands-on learning in practicum/laboratory settings, and further integration and specification hands-on in the clinical setting. Through the program and a personal focus on student learning, we strive to assist students in preparation for their roles in a rapidly changing world and create an appreciation for cultural diversity.
The process of providing the knowledge and skills required to administer health-care to the physically active is as intense in the classroom as in the clinical rotation settings. Formal instruction in the classroom provides the foundation for a student. Laboratory experiences and competency evaluation in Practicum/Laboratory courses and clinical rotations provide the exposure a student needs to confirm or reaffirm that foundation of knowledge allowing the "How's", "What's" and "Why's" to be integrated into the student's knowledge and experience. Following program completion, students are qualified to successfully complete state license and national certification exams as well as act confidently as a practicing professional while living a balanced life including spirit, mind, and body development.
The clinical/practical portion of the program is designed to allow the student to learn, practice, and perform athletic training skills in a safe learning progression. The student learns clinical skills in specific sequences in class and lab, after which the student is evaluated for skill proficiency. Following that evaluation, the student is expected to practice and perform those skills in the clinical setting under the supervision of a clinical instructor. The student is re-evaluated for skill acquisition and knowledge integration. This allows the students to confirm or reaffirm that foundation of knowledge. It also provides plenty of clinical skill exposure required to perform athletic training duties effectively.
