EXSS Mission

The Department of Exercise and Sport Science seeks to develop the total personality of the individual student through a selected and varied program of athletic training, sport management, recreation leadership, teacher certification, exercise science, motor activities, and related educational opportunities.

Desirable outcomes for the individual expected to result from this emphasis are a greater understanding of human performance from a physiological, anatomical, kinesiological, and functional standpoint. The exercise scientist excels at assessment, prescription, and the physiological basis for physical fitness. In addition, a high level of physical fitness, improved motor skills, greater neuromuscular coordination, personal and group social skills, refined kinesthetic sense, ability to think and to interpret knowledge, and refined and enlarged appreciation for an understanding of activity performance are expected outcomes.

Career Possibilities

Exercise and Sport Science majors receive the requisite, professional preparation to graduate equipped with the ability to pursue exciting careers from a dynamic sport and fitness industry. Career opportunities for EXSS majors include such areas as Physical Education Teacher, Athletic Coach/Director, Athletic Trainer, Commercial/Community Recreation Director, Corporate Fitness Instructor/Manager, Dietician, Health/Fitness Consultant, Sport Marketing/Public Relations Specialist, Personal Trainer, Sport Facility Manager, Sports Official, Fitness/Health Club Manager, Sporting Goods Associate/Manager, Sports and Fitness Nutritionist, and Strength/Conditioning Specialist. EXSS majors obtain the educational foundation to pursue advanced degrees in related fields at graduate school or continued education necessary to pursue careers as Sports Agent, Physical Therapist, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Exercise Physiologist, Exercise Scientist or Sports Psychologist.
Students majoring in Exercise and Sport Science have the opportunity to select from four different areas of specialization: Exercise Science, All Level Texas State Teacher Certification, Athletic Training and Sport Management. Each area of specialization provides foundational components as well as emphasis on specific curriculum designed to develop graduates for entrance into a multi-faceted, sport/fitness-related career.
