Dr. Janene Lewis
Janene Lewis received her Ph.D. from Texas Christian University in 1999 and has been teaching in the English Department at UMHB since the fall of 2001. Dr. Lewis teaches Contemporary World Literature, Literature and Social Consciousness, and Scientific Writing. Dr. Lewis has been a panel member and director of the UMHB Central Texas Book Club. She has presented several papers at professional conferences such as the National Association of Developmental Educators, the Conference of College Composition and Communication, and the National Council of Teachers of English. Dr. Lewis has also published articles in the Middle Atlantic Writer’s Association Review and the TFW and has co-authored Composition Teaching and Christian Tradition: An Annotated Bibliography for the Rhetoric and Christian Tradition website. She was a member of the National Committee on Best Practices for the Millennial Student. The committee’s findings were published in Network: A Journal of Faculty Development in 2007. From 2011-2013, in conjunction with the National Council of Teachers of English, Dr. Lewis hosted a campus-wide African American Read-In. In Summer 2014, she received a professional development grant to study best practices in developmental writing. She presented those findings at the meeting of the National Association of Developmental Educators in February 2015.
Dr. Lewis's personal interests include fostering homeless or sick dogs. She also belongs to several community groups that provide education and support to families of special needs children.
Dr. Lewis's current interests include scientifc writing and monsters and science in literature. She restarted the African-American Read-In in Spring 2017 and added an African-American creative writing contest in honor of Black History Month. Dr. Lewis is involved with Scholars' Day, assessment and institutional research; she serves on serves on several committees: the Undergraduate Research Committee, the Curriculum Committee, the Convocation committee, and the Academic IQ Council.
