Dr. Heather Francis
I am originally from West Texas and grew up in the mountains of Big Bend and the Chihuahuan Desert! My undergraduate degree is from Sul Ross State University where I majored in Biology. I moved to Temple in 1991 and began a career at Scott & White Hospital where I still continue to work today. I completed my graduate work in 2010 obtaining a Ph.D. in Medical Sciences from Texas A&M Health Science Center and currently operate a research laboratory on the VA campus. I am also a proud Veteran’s Affairs employee and dedicate the majority of my research time to understanding liver disease that affects millions of US Veterans.
The main goals of my research program are to investigate the cellular and molecular mechanisms of liver function and liver disease (including liver cancer) and the specific way that histamine, anti-histamines and mast cells may be involved in this process. One of my biggest passions is to interact with and mentor young scientists! I have even had several UMHB students join us during the summer!
I am the proud mom of two daughters, one lives in Austin and is pursuing a degree in medicine and one is a sophomore at BHS! I also am owned by two doxies who run my entire house & life! J
