National Qualifiers on the UMHB Speech Team

Fri, 04/01/2016

The UMHB Speech and Debate Team has had an unprecedented number of students qualify for nationals this year.  There are two national tournaments—one through the American Forensic Association and one through the National Forensic Association.  The AFA tournament is considered more prestigious because it is more difficult to qualify for.  Here are our qualifiers for the 2015-16 school year:

American Forensic Association:
Kelzye Isham—impromptu speaking
Starr Rivers—poetry interpretation and program oral interpretation
Allison McKeown—persuasive speaking and informative speaking
Carlee Skinner—program oral interpretation
Mike Perry—after dinner speaking and impromptu speaking

National Forensic Association:
Kelzye Isham—impromptu speaking, after dinner speaking, prose interpretation
Starr Rivers—poetry interpretation and program oral interpretation
Allison McKeown—persuasive speaking and informative speaking
Katie Stringer—program oral interpretation, prose interpretation, dramatic interpretation
Carlee Skinner—program oral interpretation, prose interpretation, Lincoln-Douglas debate
Mike Perry—after dinner speaking, persuasive speaking, and impromptu speaking
Stephen Bedwell—persuasive speaking, impromptu speaking, Lincoln-Douglas debate
David Taylor—impromptu speaking

These numbers are a huge improvement over previous years for us.  The most that UMHB has qualified in the past within a single year are six students to NFA and only one student to AFA in one event.  We are thrilled with the results of this year!
