Left Shadow Right Shadow

Renate Viveen Hood, Ph.D.

Position:
Associate Professor, College of Christian Studies

Dr. Renate Viveen Hood is a native from the Netherlands. She joined the University of Mary Hardin Baylor in the Fall of 2009 as Associate Professor of Christian Studies. Prior to her move to Belton, Dr. Hood served for six years at LeTourneau University where she taught a variety of courses, including Biblical Literature (Old Testament and New Testament), Greek language and ancient manuscript courses, Honors Program courses, and a variety of specialized courses pertaining to apocalyptic literature, the social background of the New Testament, global theology, etc.

Dr. Hood was formerly trained as a biotechnological engineer in the Netherlands, has done extensive travelling, and spent two years as a missionary in Indonesia where she taught at a mission school. During her seminary training she met her husband, Dr. Ronnie Hood. Together they have been and are active in a variety of Christian ministry avenues. From working with international students to puppet ministry, overseas missions, youth , senior, and pastoral work, the Hoods have been exposed to a wealth of experiences which they bring to the Mary Hardin-Baylor community. Not in the least do they feel their family is the core of their ministry. Married later in life, the Hoods have young children--a daughter (Anastasia Janneke) and a son (Keanu Jip). Together with their love for mini dachshunds and other pets, the kids keep them on their toes but bring lots of laughter to their household. As a family, they serve in Canyon Creek Baptist Church in Temple where Dr. Ronnie Hood is senior pastor.

As a person dedicated to vibrant and engaging teaching, Dr. Hood believes in using technology in instruction and making full use of the university MyCampus electronic database system. Most of her lectures are accompanied by PowerPoint presentations and other visual augmentations, along with class room discussions. In the summer of 2011, she used a UMHB summer grant to travel to Israel and the Sinai dessert to collect digital material and created clips that enhance her teaching and student learning. Her courses emphasize the ancient setting of biblical literature and incorporate the nuances of the biblical languages. Dr. Hood is a Mentor-Scholar for the internationally renowned Green Scholars Initiative.

Personal Statement:

I believe that integrating Christian faith into academic endeavors demands a guidance role of the teacher in the intellectual and spiritual journey of students. Such a guiding role can, and will, only be realized with the educator maintaining a close relationship with Jesus Christ and walking in His grace, while leaving the students free to take this journey at their own pace. I am the kind of teacher who, besides leading by example, provides the students with key questions to ask in the process of acquiring knowledge. Such knowledge leads to wisdom. The journey is owned by the students. However, we learn as we study together for a teacher never ceases to be a student.
