About Us

Purpose

This department strives to equip all their students taking these sciences with an awareness of the impact of modern technology on our society, as well as to introduce them to the essentials of these disciplilnes. Persons majoring in Chemistry are given the foundation necessary for graduate study and/or for employment in the chemical industry. Likewise, fundamental training is provided for those planning to enter the health professions or science education.

The Standard Chemistry major and the Chemistry major with a Biochemistry Emphasis are both excellent preparation for students planning to attend medical or dental school or to pursue a career in medical research. Students are encouraged to consult with their academic advisor at UMHB as to which major (Standard Chemistry or Biochemistry Emphasis) would be more beneficial to them.

Meet Our Chairperson

Welcome to the Chemistry, Environmental Science, and Geology Department @ UMHB Web Site! We offer the advantages of small classes alongside opportunities for chemical research. Our students have access to free (!) tutoring, and undergraduate research – they can attend national (!) scientific meetings, and perform exciting chemical demonstrations in the community. Up-to-date labs with state-of-the-art instrumentation (Autoclave, Mass Spectrometer, Colorimeter, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Ultraviolet/Visible Spectroscopy, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer, High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Gas Chromatography, Magnetic Susceptibility Balance, Polarimeter, Refractometer, Refrigerated Centrifuge, and others) provide valuable hands-on experiences for future employment. Sigma Pi, the nationally recognized Student Affiliates group of the American Chemical Society, offers  academic, social, and community service projects for students. These learning opportunities are enhanced by the Christian environment of UMHB. May God bless you in your studies and future endeavors!

Sincerely,
Ruth Ann Murphy, Ph.D.
