Emily Ensley, one of our Biology majors, has been accepted into an REU at UT Southwestern Medical Center this summer (2017)! The SURF-STEM CELL program at the Hamon Center for Regenerative Science and Medicine is a new one. The goal of this summer program is to offer students a broad overview of stem cell and regenerative science and medicine … from the fundamental biology of regenerating planaria to human induced pluripotent stem cells, from the bone marrow transplant hospital wards to stem cell therapy boutiques, and to ethical concerns regarding editing the genome of the human embryo. Students will gain hands-on experience in stem cell and regenerative science in one of the faculty laboratories. Congratulations, Emily!
We are proud of the students in this department so this page is our opportunity to highlight some of their accomplishments, especially in research, and awards over the course of the year. If you know of someone who needs to be mentioned on this page, or if you yourself should be, please contact Dr. Wood with the details. The three Biology Department awards (Outstanding Student in Biology, the Ola Joyce Springer Hander/Lucille Capt Endowed Scholarship, and the Dr. Sally A. Provence Presidential Endowed Scholarship) are described, along with the current award recipients, under the "Student Awards" tab to the left.
At our student worker appreciation party we had a biology cell cookie decorating contest. The best (and only) prokaryotic cookie belonged to Katie Bennett! The best plant cell cookie decorator was Bill Bryant! And finally, the best animal cell cookie came from Tim Jones!
